Performance Tests WISC / MISIC
The performance-based tests namely —picture completion, block design, object assembly, and coding—are components of intelligence tests developed by David Wechsler, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). These tests are designed to assess different aspects of cognitive functioning. Here’s an overview of each:
- Picture Completion:
- Description: Picture completion is a subtest that assesses visual perception and attention to detail. Test-takers are presented with pictures or images that are incomplete or missing a critical element. The task is to identify and verbally state or point out the missing part. This test is designed to measure visual alertness and the ability to recognize essential details in visual stimuli.
- Block Design:
- Description: Block design is a subtest that evaluates spatial processing, visual-motor integration, and non-verbal problem-solving skills. Test-takers are given a set of colored blocks and a model or a picture, and they are required to replicate the design using the blocks. This task assesses an individual’s ability to analyze and organize visual-spatial information and manipulate objects in the mind.
- Object Assembly:
- Description: Object assembly is a subtest that measures visual-motor and fine-motor skills, as well as perceptual organization. Test-takers are provided with pieces of a puzzle or a fragmented picture, and the task is to assemble the pieces into a complete and recognizable object or picture. This test assesses the ability to visually organize and integrate information.
- Coding:
- Description: Coding is a subtest that evaluates processing speed, attention, and fine motor coordination. Test-takers are presented with a key that pairs symbols with numbers, and they are required to fill in a coding sheet by using these symbols to match numbers within a specified time limit. Coding assesses the ability to quickly and accurately process visual information and translate it into a motor response.
These performance-based tests are often used in combination with verbal tests to provide a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s cognitive abilities. The results from these subtests, along with other measures, contribute to the calculation of composite scores, such as the Performance IQ, in intelligence tests like the WAIS and WISC. It’s important to note that the specific tasks and scoring procedures may vary slightly between different versions of these tests.
